Polarities: Harnessing Opposites to Achieve the Benefits of Both / And
We all face situations where the instinct is to choose between two “opposites.” Yet neither opposite, on its own, is enough. Should we prioritize the legacy of the family or the need for innovation in the family business. Should we give the NextGen flexibility and autonomy or impose structure? Should we press for change or keep with tradition? The answer isn’t one or the other, it’s Both / And.
The opposites listed above are examples of “Polarities” – where the benefits of Both are needed over time. With polarities, the singular use of one opposite ultimately leads to failure; success requires both. The difficulty is that we each have preferences, so we overvalue the opposite that we prefer and ignore, resist, or discount the one we don’t. In our personal lives and professional endeavors, this approach limits our happiness and interferes with our success.
During the keynote, Betsy will help us explore the power and strategic approach of Both / And through the framework of Polarities.
